Radish skin can be white, pink, purple, red, brown, black, or green. Some even look like tiny watermelons!  When you eat radishes, you get a good dose of vitamin C, phosphorous, and zinc at only 9 calories per half cup. Radishes are related to cabbage, broccoli, and mustard.

Radishes add a big flavor punch to salads that is similar to horse radish. You can use them on salads, sandwiches, and tacos to name a few things. Here are tips to get you started:

  1. Remove the greens. It is best to remove the greens from the radishes as soon as you get home from the store. Take care to rinse the radish greens because they are often sandy. You don’t have to throw them out. The radish greens can be used in a tossed salad, slaw, and pesto. Rinse the radishes and
    store them in a covered bowl or container.
  2. Slice them all at once. It is easy to use a Japanese mandolin or serrated knife to slice the radishes thin. Radishes keep for a week in the refrigerator and they can be sliced for use in salads, slaws, tacos,
    and sandwiches. Keep them sealed in a container or bag so they stay fresh.
  3. Try a variety of radishes. There are many types of radishes from daikons to Easter egg to European. There are even tangy radish micro greens on the market. Try one each week to have a little variety and to find out what you and your family like the most!
  4. Grate them for even more uses. Grated radishes are fantastic when added to slaw and tacos. They add color and a nice bite!

More great ideas for radishes:

  • Add thin radish slices to sandwiches.
  • Make a radish dip by pulsing 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt, 1/4 cup chopped radishes, one minced garlic clove, and a splash of red wine vinegar in a food processor until smooth.
  • Add a few grated radishes to your favorite slaw.
  • Give tuna salad or chicken salad pep and crunch by adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of chopped radishes.
  • Coarsely chopped radishes give tacos zesty crunch.
  • Top your steak or burger with grilled radish slices.
  • Use radishes as a healthy crudité for dips.
  • Pickle them like you would cucumbers.
